Type a pattern in the box. Each word on the left shows a tick when the pattern matches it, and each word on the right shows a cross when the pattern wrongly matches it. The puzzle is solved when all eight on the left match and none on the right do.Your score is the number of characters in the pattern, and lower is better. Par is the length of our own solution, which you can reveal after solving; shorter patterns usually exist. The pattern is a JavaScript regular expression without flags, tested against each lowercase word, and it does not have to match the whole word.The words come from the same list of 8,636 five-letter English words that checks guesses in our word games. Everything runs in your browser, and nothing you type is sent to us.

Regex golf is the game of writing the shortest pattern that separates two lists. We build each day's lists from a hidden rule, such as a double letter or the same first and last letter, so every day has at least one solution. The rule comes from a fixed list in order, and the words are drawn from the dictionary with a seed taken from the day number, so everyone sees the same puzzle on the same day.
